World Food Day

October 16

Celebrated on October 16 each year in honor of the date the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded in 1945.

The objectives of World Food Day are to encourage attention to agricultural food production, encourage economic and technical cooperation among developing countries, encourage the participation of rural people, heighten public awareness of hunger in the world, promote the transfer of technologies to the developing world, and strengthen international and national solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

Since 1981, World Food Day has adopted an official theme each year to give focus to observances and increase understanding of problems and solutions in the drive to end hunger. The theme for 2016 is “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.”

Zero Hunger Run

Each year a a 10K competitive race and a 5K non-competitive walk / run is held to focus public attention on the fact that hundreds of millions of people around the world still live in chronic hunger and to raise funds to help hunger-affected communities meet their own food needs over the long term. In 2016, the Zero Hunger Run will take place in Rome.
