Greenery Day

May 4 (Japan)

Currently part of the Japanese Golden Week vacation period,
Greenery Day is
a national holiday in Japan.

Originally observed on April 29 in observance of Emperor Shōwa's birthday, it was changed to May 4 during a 2005 revision of national holidays in Japan. Emperor Shōwa had a special fondness for plant life and "Greenery Day" acknowledges this as a day to commune with nature and appreciate its blessings.

Golden Week

The longest vacation period of the year for many Japanese jobs, Golden Week begins April 29 with a celebration of the Emperor's birthday and continues through a Constitution Memorial Day on May, Greenery Day on May 4, and Children's Day on May 5 .

Golden Week is a popular time for traveling.
