U.S.
President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish this holiday in
1949. Armed Forces Day replaced separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and
Air Force Days and recognized the unification of the Armed Forces under
one department -- the Department of Defense. On the
third Saturday in May
U.S. citizens are urged to thank military members for their patriotic
service.
Several other nations have an Armed Forces Day in honor of their military forces. ANZAC Day On April 25, the bravery and sacrifice of the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) is officially recognized on ANZAC Day. It commemorates the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I on April 25, 1915 in Gallipoli, Turkey. Traditional ANZAC Day festivities often include ANZAC biscuits, which are biscotti-like oatmeal biscuits. ANZAC Day is also a public holiday in Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tonga.
