Anzac Day

Cadets Standing to Attention During the Anzac Day Ceremony, Melbourne, Australia
Cadets Standing to Attention During the Anzac Day Ceremony, Melbourne, Australia

April 25 is a national day of remembrance in Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tonga for those who died and served in military operations.

Anzac Day originally commemorated members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought in the disastrous Dardanelles campaign at Gallipoli in Turkey in 1915.

Dawn Parades

In New Zealand, Anzac Day celebrations for remembrance often include 'Dawn Parades' by members of the cadets, police, fire service, etc. There is also the tradition of wearing paper poppies as symbols of remembrance similar to the tradition for Remembrance Sunday in other Commonwealth countries.
