Gen, Israel Putnam, 1845-46
says that in february of 1779 patriot Gen. Israel Putnam escaped a
British raiding party in hot pursuit by plunging his horse down a
stretch of seventy-four steps in West Greenwich so treacherously steep
that the enemy lacked the nerve to follow him. Those steps, on what
soon became known as Putnam's Hill, had almost completey disappeared by
the 1830s. In 1900 a monument was placed at the spot where Putnam
reportedly began his dangerus descent, and two years lateer twenty or
so steps were cut into the hillside to represent the ones down which
Putnam had daringly directed his horse."
