Handbook of Psychotropic Herbs
A Scientific Analysis of Herbal Remedies for Psychiatric Conditions

Handbook of Psychotropic Herbs
by Ethan B. Russo
The Haworth Herbal Press, 2001

The use of herbs for treatment of depression, insomnia, dementia, anxiety and other psychiatric conditions is carefully analyzed in this survey of current scientific knowledge. Along with an overview of more than two dozen herbal remedies and their regulatory status, the handbook discusses research on their effectiveness and case studies of clinical applications.

Dr. Ethan Russo, a University of Montana neurologist with an interest in medicinal plants, compiled the handbook to "present a balanced picture of herbal benefits and risks," he said, "Their promulgation and usage may contribute greatly to the collective mental health of our society."

The first three chapters of the handbook cover the recent history of medicinal herb use, including the regulatory environment and methodological standards under which researchers and herbalists are working. Homeopathy and wildcrafting are discussed along with DSHEA and animal studies.

The bulk of the book, however, is devoted to an analysis of five major psychiatric conditions and the herbs employed in their treatment, followed by nine case studies and a detailed bibliography.
