The
Stratford Farmers Market will be at the fairgrounds one last time this Thanksgiving weekend before moving to the new 12,000-square-foot market space at Agriplex for Oct. 18.
The new market was originally scheduled to open in July, but construction delays forestalled the opening of the $6.6-million Agriplex.
The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Commission has decided not to relax its policy forbidding vendors from selling food they don’t produce.

At a meeting on Wednesday the market officials considered a policy change that would have loosened the rules, but it was unanimously agreed that the restrictions should not be eased.
The Greensboro News-Record quoted David Hoggard, a member of the commission: “The integrity of the market is based upon … local products. It is a farmers curb market, and it’s supposed to be a local farmers curb market.”
The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Commission will discuss the issue of buying and reselling goods at the 134-year-old Greensboro Farmers’ Curb Market at an October 8 meeting. At issue is whether to loosen a policy on selling items not grown by the farmer selling them.
“For proponents, it’s a way to give farmers flexibility and provide more variety. But for others, it’s a move that strikes at the heart of the market’s appeal. They want tougher enforcement of current rules,” the Greensboro News-Record reports.
“At the same time, some city leaders have floated the notion of moving the market from its longtime home. A move could offer more space but, some worry, at the cost of the ambiance that is as much the market’s appeal as rich, red tomatoes.
“The question is simple, even if the answers are complex. How does the market grow without losing its soul?”

A police crackdown on a drum circle at the Wednesday downtown Santa Cruz farmers market prompted a public protest that drew about 100 people to the streets.
The San Jose Mercury News reported that “Wednesday’s rally was a protest against recent police action to crack down on what some say is becoming a public nuisance at the farmers market. What started as a small drum circle years ago now attracts upward of 100 people who get drunk, smoke pot, strew trash about, leave puddles of urine on the asphalt and block the parking lot for farmers market shoppers.”
The first farmers’ market in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, will be opening on Monday, September 22, and continuing on Mondays from 3 to 6 p.m. through October.
